Update On The Book (Because You Asked)
Update On The Book (Because You Asked) I hate to blog about things that I think will turn you off, and I try not to blog too much about me, or the book, or my conferences, etc. But I am getting a lot of e-mails and chat messages asking me how the book is doing. So heres a quick update. Let me put this into the context of you can do this, and it will greatly help develop your personal brand. In other words, dont take this as a brag or whatever, but think about how having your own book will help you professionally. Last week I was in Austin, Texas, presenting to the Launch Pad Job Club I wish there were more of these throughout the country, as they it is a stellar organization. I was introduced as author of and the person introducing me said something like its only 124 pages long and most of the front is page after page of endorsements about how great the book is! I got a laugh out of that. Even my publisher told me that hes never had as many endorsements as I have, and they are still rolling in. Yesterday I was on a radio interview (recorded podcast) with Central Valley Business Times, in California. The interview is 11 minutes, and pretty interesting (if I do say so myself :)). Its on the front page right now but Im sure that will change, so heres the link to the story, with a link to the podcast at the very bottom. The only reason I got that interview was because my publisher put a press release out, and it got picked up by these guys. If you want to hear one of the most professional radio voices Ive heard, go listen to it (not my voice, mind you :)). On Monday I got an e-mail from my publisher saying that Im on LinkedIn Now What??? was in the 5,000s on the Amazon ranking. I think this various by the hour, and Ive seen it usually sit somewhere between 30,000 and 120,000 so to be one of the top 5,000 books was pretty cool. But thanks to author Anita Bruzzese, and her advice, I will not be following the Amazon rankings Someone who I think is a hero, a superstar, a rockstar, a legend, Robert Sutton, who authored (parents, cover your kids eyes) The No Asshole Rule, which has an awesome story behind it and has taken the world by storm, sent me an endorsement. A really nice endorsement. When I replied that it was very, very nice, he wrote me a personal, sincere compliment about my writing. Yes, it was quite flattering, and yes, hes won me over and Im one of his biggest fans. I actually got a royalty check. No, Im not rich, and it wasnt a ton of money, but it was the first one. Ive been conditioned to not expect any money so getting that royalty check was a nice surprise! I am way behind on linking to the bloggers who have blogged about it. But Ill share one with you that I just saw. This one comes with some history, too long to explain. Lets just say that John was instrumental in evaluating JibberJobber when there were too many rough edges, and he found a number of flaws. Well, go read the Reinke Faces Life blog post about this book. Its really quite a complement, as he ends his post with From the fellow who recommends very very few things a (job)seeker should pay for, this is one of them. Im still shocked. When I hosted the Blogging for Business Conference on Monday I handed the speakers an autographed copy of my book. It was really cool to be able to give them something valuable (more than a Hallmark card, right?), and personal, as a thank you. I was invited to speak at the Personal Branding Telesummit, which is going to be the biggest thing to hit personal branding ever! The requirement to be a speaker is to be an author! I am in talks with a number of organizations that have reached out to me to speak to their groups which is pretty cool considering I didnt reach out to any of them. Hopefully Im working on you convincing you to write your own book! So, how is the book selling? I am not sure. I dont ask Happy About for numbers. I have too many other things to work on, and watching this metric will only stress me out. so to everyone who asks how its selling, my answer is I dont know. Still wondering what Im talking about? You can get the book from Amazon, or Happy About (you can also get the ebook for around $12 from Happy About) to check it out. 7 Tips When the Hiring Manager is a Skype Interview No Show
7 Tips When the Hiring Manager is a Skype Interview No Show As a job seeker, you spend a great amount of time setting up a Skype interview or phone screening. The best Skype interview involves more than just sitting in front of a webcam talking to a hiring manager. You work to be on time, so what do you do when the interview no show turns out to be the company? We offer these 7 tips for you on how to handle it.1. Keep Calm and CoolWe have all been stuck in traffic, had internet connectivity issues, or people just get sick. Instead of firing off a critical email to the hiring manager about how offended you were by the interview no show, take a step back and remember...you really do not know, until you know better. So, the hiring manager was an interview no show. Here is what you can do next:2. When the Hiring Manager Is LateIf you had a time set up for an 11:00 am Skype interview, and by 11:15 am the hiring manager has not called, send an email asking if all is ok and if you have the right time. Remember, you want to give your best Skype inter view, so do not get pushy. You simply do not know if the hiring manager got the time zones mixed up, or if they simply forgot. People make mistakes. We are all human. Remain patient. But certainly, send a friendly email to ask if you should consider setting up a new Skype interview time.3. When the Hiring Manager Is REALLY LateLetâs just say it is now 11:30 am and this hiring manager is obviously missing out on the best Skype interview ever conducted. When you hit the 30-minute mark, and no one replied to your email, you can safely assume they have either forgotten or the hiring manager is an interview no show. However, still stay by your Skype to give your interview. Why? Because you do not know for sure. It has happened where hiring managers have either noticed they should be on a call, or they have no Internet. The simple fact is...you do not know. But you did spend time setting up a Skype interview, so see it through for the next 30 minutes.4. Itâs Now 11:45 AMand the Hiring M anager Has Not CalledPatience is a virtue. Remain calm and ready to give your best Skype interview, ever. Why? If they call in finally, they are trying to do one of two things:Trying to be early for the Skype interview at 12:00 pm. Their time zones were off. They finally got connected and wanted to salvage time by setting up a new Skype interview. Both of these things have happened, and it is best to show you do not crack under the pressure of having to wait 45 minutes when they finally speak to you. Companies place considerable value in employees who remain calm and handle diversity with ease. Your hiring manager was an interview no show until now. So, letâs say they STILL do not call. What do you do next?5. Itâs 12:00 PM and No One Has Called Until 12:05 PMYou have every reason in the world to be disappointed, after setting up a Skype interview, preparing to give what you know would be the most amazing, best Skype interview ever known. But that is still no reason to take it out on the hiring manager if/when you connect with them again. Why? Hiring managers obviously do not run the company. You have already formed your first impression of this company based on the interview no show, which should be a sign the job maybe would not work out for you. So, in one perspective, the hiring managerâs mistake was your gain. You now know if you really want to work for this company. So, letâs say...they do call in at 12:00 or 12:05 pm, and apologize for being late. You can guarantee that they got the time wrong. Do not be a jerk about it. Do not even bring it up, unless they do first. It looks like you are being petty. Laugh it off to yourself as a sign that this companyâs hiring manager needs to learn how to use a Google calendar.6. When 12:15 PM Rolls Around...It Is an Interview No ShowNow is the time when you say to yourself: âI am going to calmly write an email and let them know I showed up to do the Skype interview but did not connect. Should I consider sett ing up a new Skype interview?â Write a friendly email and see what happens. If they reply with an apology, great. If they do not reply within 24 hours, that company is officially on your âNo Apply Listâ. Unfortunately, not everyone sees a need to respect the time of complete strangers. If companies have employees behaving this way, it may be a sign of something bigger. Be happy you were not interviewed or hired.7. After the Interview No ShowWell, you did your best Skype interview possible. You were on time. You were prepared. You checked the interview time was accurate before waiting an hour for an interview that did not show. Then, you sent an email along the way checking that all was ok. It was courteous of you.Unfortunately, this happens and job interviews do not always turn out to be entirely fair processes. They may have skipped your interview for some other reason you will never know. Therefore, just write it off as a lesson learned in the values of patience, courtesy, an d professionalism. Experiences like this, in the long run, make you a stronger job candidate. If you have ever been the hiring manager who missed the interview, it might be time to consider hiring a specialized recruiting agency to help with your interviews.

How to Become an Invaluable Employee in 3 Steps - Classy Career Girl
How to Become an Invaluable Employee in 3 Steps Entrepreneurship: we have heard this word time and time again, but what about Intrapreneurship? Intrapreneurship is applying an entrepreneurial mindset to an employee role. As an employee, many of us have real concerns about being replaced, laid off, or even fired. By employing an intrapreneurial focus to your role, you can become an invaluable employee that the company covets and needs. In an interview on The Dr. Jaime Show, Jodi McLean, author of Intrapreneur: Discover how to be the Irreplaceable Employee shares 3 tips on what it takes to become an Invaluable Employee. How to Become an Invaluable Employee in 3 Steps Step 1: Know Your Value As an intrapreneur, you must approach your employee role as your own business. Companies market their strengths and their unique value to their prospects and customers every single day. Thatâs how businesses fill their pipeline with qualified leads and new customers while keeping their current client base happy. As an employee, you need to shift your focus to thinking about the services that you provide as being your own business, and your one-and-only client is the company that pays you. No one owes you a position or a paycheck, you have to re-earn that revenue stream every day that you come to work. You must become self-aware so that you can understand your personal marketability that will not only keep your âone-and-only clientâ happy but also entice potential customers to take notice of you and gain new job opportunities. In order to know your value, make a list of the unique features that you bring to your role. It can be things like tenure, examples of innovative ideas, problem-solving measures, bottom-line sensitivity, and advocacy for the company. Step 2: Have a Pitch To become an invaluable employee you should be able to pitch your company to a client. You must understand the customerâs problems and the unique solutions that your company solves in order to complete a successful pitch. Having a strong pitch can solve the problem in one short sentence. If your company doesnât already have a corporate pitch, this is your opportunity to step up and show initiative and innovation. Way to be an intrapreneur! [RELATED: 1o Steps To a Promotion (Without Working Longer)] Step 3: Be Brave Being an intrapreneur requires stepping up and taking a stand and that can be scary. It is important that you internalize and believe in your strengths. You must feel conviction in your value. Market yourself and relentlessly. Make corporate leaders very aware of the value and strategic commitment that you bring to the company. Speak up and be vocal about your successes and hard work. Be brave in marketing yourself to your âone and onlyâ client. You can be brave by speaking out professionally through the many social media platforms. Try blogging as a method to promote your company. Also, you can be a valuable asset to your company by being prepared for meetings and bringing innovative ideas to share. During annual performance reviews, take charge with well-written and documented examples of projects you have lead up throughout the year. Consider opportunities outside of your department, like having lunch with leaders from different divisions or attending networking events to meet people in your community. Think outside of the job parameters in the company policies when it comes to being brave and speaking up. Thinking outside of the box is part of what makes you an intrapreneur and invaluable employee.

Breaking into Brewing Tips for Women Looking to Enter the World of Craft Beer
Breaking into Brewing Tips for Women Looking to Enter the World of Craft Beer My goal in life is to âlive bigâ which for me, means doing things despite obstacles and fears, which is how I ended up working in the beer industry. I think most people have a history of thinking about it as a âboys club,â the drink of choice for frat boys and men watching football, but that stereotype is being shaken up, and it is exciting to be a part of that. Every day, women are taking over male-dominated industries, and that includes the field of brewing, which makes sense, because it started as a womenâs craft! Did you know that as early as 1800 B.C., brewing beer was on the list of a womanâs daily chores in several ancient cultures? Somewhere along the line, men were named as the sole beer drinkers and beer brewers, while women became a sales tactic. Women Drink Beer, Too! Not anymore! Women drink beer, we love beer, and because of that, the craft beer industry is seeing a new wave of creativity and popularity with a âwomanâs touch,â making this quite the empowering field for females in 2019! Iâd love to help other women along their path, and here is some of the top advice I would give: Have Patience: Good beer takes time and so does building up a career. I started behind the bar and now work as a brewer, but that didnât happen overnight. Be patient and youâll make magic happen â" all in due time. Ask for Help: At Concrete Beach Brewery, I was able to come on board and really be a hands-on participant in the brewing process. Every question I had, I spoke up and asked, looking to the experts at CBB to help me succeed. I wouldnât be where I am today if it werenât for the help of others. Learn to Challenge the Obstacles: Youâre going to run into obstacles. When you do, look for a way to make them learning experiences. Ask questions and learn new techniques to get through any obstacles in the way. This is also a call back to my previous tip. If you hit a challenge you canât overcome, donât give up â" ask for help! Always be proud of what you do: Youâve broken down barriers for other women looking to enter the industry just by doing what you do. That is so incredibly cool and you should be so very proud of that. Empowered Women Empower Women: Throughout the surrounding breweries in Southern Florida, and furthermore the nation, we see more women coming into the industry in brewing, marketing, sales and management â" itâs awesome to see strong female leaders supporting other women in the field! Breaking Into Brewing Every woman who enters the industry is opening a door to a market that hasnât always felt open to women and thatâs reason enough to celebrate how far things have come. Keep breaking down those barriers ladies and bring on the brews! This guest post was authored by Alexandra Miranda Alexandra (Ale) Miranda is a Miami, Florida native who began her career in beer serving at World of Beer and working behind the bar at Concrete Beach Brewery before the science behind it all truly fascinated her. She moved into the position of product assistant at Concrete Beach Brewery and was soon moved to intern brewer and she is now a full time brewer at Concrete Beach.

6 Ways to Cope with Stress When Working Away From Home - CareerMetis.com
6 Ways to Cope with Stress When Working Away From Home When you say you are traveling for work, people often believe that it is all fun and games and glamorous. Only people who do travel for work usually know that this is not the case. When you work at home, you know you are going to go back to your house at the end of the day and spend time with your family or in a generally much more peaceful place. When you are traveling, it is like the workday doesnât end. You work in the same place, and you go back to sleep in a place that is not your home. It can end up being stressful especially for people who are not fans of traveling.evalIf things stay this way, then you eventually begin to dread the thought of going to a distant area for work purposes. But you can get over this stress if you work on it! You need to stop dealing the trip as work and think of it as an experience. It is rare that you are required to work all hours of the day, you probably do get some time to yourself.Utilize this time well, and we can assure you that you will fin d yourself in a much better position soon enough:1. Look Around Town and Have FunevalPeople often spend their work trips going from their place of work to their hotel room and vice versa. This routine becomes monotonous since you are essentially just repeating a set of movements which can quickly become tiring. People fear to have to leave their hotel room because the land is foreign and they believe they will lose their way or end up in unnecessary trouble.Eventually, this routine makes you miss your family and friends back home. You also lose your television, and your fridge stocked full of food. You start dreading the next day instead of looking forward to it, and the whole idea of working at all becomes very stressful. What you need to realize is that there is another entirely new land outside your place of work and a hotel room. This place needs exploration. You can meet the locals there and talk to them. Sure, you might encounter a rude person or two, but for the most part, the se adventures work out well if you are careful to be sure to carry your passport and any other form of identity with you. Know the place of the hotel you are staying in and the place of your work so you can be led to safety even if something goes wrong One of the most exciting things about new lands is their food and cuisine. You can go out and try local foods and specialties. It might not always suit your taste, but the experience is still worth discussing!Remember that we live in a rapidly developing world and all the places in this world are constantly changing. So if you visited an area two or three years ago, know that it has probably changed quite a bit by now and you have more to explore over there. So donât think that you have seen the best of every place and go out and explore that town!2. Donât Sit and Work in One PlacePeople often choose to coop up in their hotel rooms and work for the whole day. Sitting in one place and working can be very stressful and even counter- productive. It could make your routine very monotonous and tedious because your trip mainly consists of work more than anything else. If you add a little bit of zing to your style of working, you can be more productive.Try to go out of your room for work. The most accessible place to be is in the lobby of your hotel room. Hotel lobbies are comfy, and service is always available. There are often people around as well. If you find yourself around people all the time, then you will stop feeling as lonely and stressed out.evalOther than that, you can also make your way to nearby coffee shops. Coffee shops are also full of the hustle and bustle, and they are great places to be around people and work without any monotony. You can even go to a park for your work. Parks are also full of life. They also have a lot of scenic beauty to offer so you can work under the open sky and breathe the fresh air which will prevent you from getting stressed out. If you change your place of work, you can ma ke your work more interesting.3. Make New FriendsOne of the most daunting things about going to work trips is being alone. Loneliness can stress you out a lot, and you eventually begin to crave human contact. For this reason, you can try to befriend the people around you. For example, if you are on a trip with a couple of workmates, you can get to know them better even if you donât talk to them often. You might find that you both have common interests. If you are traveling with a group of people, you can spend time with them as a group, and youâll feel less lonely. You can even explore the place with them, and you can watch movies and all too in your free time.Other than that, there are a lot of natives you can befriend as well. If you go and work in a hotel lobby or a coffee shop, it is inevitable that you will meet new people. You can share a table with someone and spark up a conversation. You can then keep in touch with them when you leave and even meet up with them if you eve r get a chance to revisit the place4. Talk to People Back HomeYou are going to miss the people back home as well. A wave of emotion hits you especially if you have children back home. Mothers are exceptionally anxious about the well-being of their children when they are away on work trips. This is where social media and technology can work in your favor. You can hit up your spouse or parent any time of the day when you are free and talk to them. Discuss your day with them and ask them how theirs was. When you are away from your loved ones talking to them on call seems like the best part of the day. You sometimes extend the conversation on purpose because you miss them so much. Some people like to keep their loved ones on Skype or Facetime while they work so that they get a feel for the home as well. You donât have to talk to each other you can stay on call till one of you has to leave. Sometimes working in the presence of the people you love even helps in increasing your work produc tivity.eval5. Learn to Enjoy Your SolitudeevalAlone-time is nearly impossible to come by for people with work and family. You are among so many people at work, and then you come back home to people who want to spend every minute of their day with you. Even though you get used to this lifestyle, almost no room is left for personal development this way. When you finally get some time to yourself, it is often a weird feeling. You donât know what to do with your time especially if you have run out of work to tackle. So take your time adjusting to your own company. You can do some sightseeing all by yourself and go on a journey of self-development.Maybe you will even cherish this time when you go back home to all the people waiting for you. It can serve as a form of meditation as well because your mind will be clear of all thoughts of work and responsibilities.6. Talk About Your FamilySource: Pexels.comMissing your family when you are away from work is very natural. It makes you realize how compassionate you are as a person as well. In times like these, it might even help you to talk about your family with the people around you.evalDo the old-fashioned deed of keeping your childrenâs photos in your wallet and your phone and discuss them with the people around you. Perhaps they will also begin talking about their loved ones because after all, we are all human! You can even explore your relationship with them this way. Your work-related trip might end up a necessary journey of personal growth!
